Early morning on the 6th December 2013, Google rolled out one of their latest updates to their Toolbar PageRank system. This has been a massive shock to website owners globally as Matt Cutts, head of the webspam team at Google, had previously announced earlier in the year that we should not expect any more PageRank updates before 2014.
The last PageRank update was carried out on 10th February 2013 and is usually a change that Google does not update regularly. Many people think that PageRank values are not important to a website, but I guess this update proves them wrong!
What Is Google PageRank?
PageRank is an algorithm that gives every website on the Internet a score out of 10 as a measure of its importance, with 0 being the least important and 10 being the most important.
There are a number of different factors that are taken into account when scoring a website in this way, but the main factor is the number of links pointing to a site, and the quality of those links. Google themselves like to class links as votes, where a page linking to another page classes as casting a vote. The more votes, the higher your score.
As well as links, PageRank also looks at page importance. Sites that have a higher PageRank score are classed as more important, and as a result, these sites have more weight in “voting” than those sites with a lower PageRank.
Climbing the PageRank ladder is an extremely difficult task to do, taking many years of hard effort and investment in your website. This is why it is considered as one of the best measures of a site performance and is vital when it comes to SEO link building activities.
