Forget Smartphones Or Google Glass, Google Reveals The Smart Contact Lens For Diabetics!

As online marketing specialists and a big fan of anything technology related, we best know Google for their search engine, Chrome browser, android smartphones and one of their latest inventions; the interactive Google Glass. But, what if we said they are now famous for contact lenses? You would laugh, right? Well, you may want to hold in that laughter as today Google revealed a new Smart Contact Lens for diabetics.

What Is Google’s Smart Contact Lens?

To put it simply, Google’s Smart Contact Lens analyses a person’s tears and warns them as soon as their glucose levels are low. Although this is currently just a prototype in testing, Google says they hope to develop other apps for the smart contact lens, continuously developing the product for the long term.

Google’s plan is that one day, the lens may even be able to display other types of valuable information and include small screens within the structure.

How Does Google’s Smart Contact Lens Work?

The smart contact lens can measure glucose levels in tears using a tiny wireless chip and miniaturised glucose sensor that are embedded between two layers of soft contact lens material.

The current prototypes generate a reading once per second. Google is also investigating the potential for this to serve as an early warning for the wearer, integrating tiny LED lights that could light up to indicate that glucose levels have crossed above or below certain thresholds.

Although most of us know at least one diabetes sufferer, what most people don’t realise is the daily struggle that diabetics face when trying to keep their blood sugar levels under control.

When the blood sugar levels of a diabetic are not controlled properly, it puts them at risk of a range of dangers, including damage to the eyes, kidney and heart.
