What Is A Google Penalty?

A few years back, the world of search engine optimisation (SEO) was very different to what it is today. Search engine algorithms were not as advanced as they now are, and because of that, getting a website to rank highly for a range of keywords was extremely easy. All the major search engines used to rank a website by one main factor - the number of backlinks it had. The idea being; the more websites that have links pointing to your own site, the more recommendations you have. The more recommendations you have, the more credible your site must be and therefore the higher you would rank.

So, the solution to getting a website to rank highly was simple - just get loads of websites to link to yours. Just carrying out a quick search online, you will still see loads of companies offering to build you thousands of backlinks for an extremely cheap price. SEO agencies were loving it, as they could buy these backlinks in bulk and offer guarantees to their clients for number 1 positions within a very short period of time.

However, Google soon caught onto this practice and decided to change things for the better. So, in 2012, they made a massive change to their algorithm which now meant that websites could no longer rank highly just due to the number of backlinks it had. Although backlinks are still a big part of their ranking system, it is now about the source and quality of those backlinks, rather than the quantity (as we explain in our post on Is Link Building Dead When It Comes To SEO). As well as this, they look at a whole host of other factors such as; user behaviour, social signals and online reviews to see how credible other people find your website. Many SEO agencies and website owners hated this move, as it now meant that you couldn't just buy your way to the top of the results pages - you had to earn it and this takes a lot of time and hard work.

The result for those websites that had a load of poor quality backlinks was a penalty, where they were removed or demoted in the search engine results so the sites that met the quality guidelines could prevail. If your website has experienced a sudden drop in positions or traffic, then you may have been hit by a Google penalty and should be looking for a Google penalty recovery, Google penalty removal or Google recovery service.
